This past week my brother, (won't mention his name, if you know him you do, if you don't you don't.) was standing on the sidewalk outside his middle school waiting for me to arrive and pick him up. When he was approached by someone asking him if the rumors were true. Not knowing what in the world the person was talking about, he asked the person what they mean't. That person said. "Is it true you are going to bring a gun the last day of school and shoot everybody?" my brothers response was, "I don't even own a gun." After that he pretty much dismissed the whole ordeal. But later that week he was called down to the counselors office, asked questions that in my opinion shouldn't have been asked him without a parental notification, and was told not to tell anyone. Three kids complained about him, then as usual, word flies.. now it's all over the school. School boards and everywhere else. The administration of this school smoothed things over with us, and now are looking for the people who started the rumor.
In my humble opinion it really doesn't matter. But with everything that happened this passed month at Virginia Tech, I understand that these things have to be taken seriously. But after most of the smoke has cleared as I said, he was just as surprised as the administration was to hear it. They found out he had zero involvement. As I said before however, does finding out who started the rumor really matter. Okay, so they are middle school kids, it'll blow over? Correct? not really.
He's always been a loner and an outcast, people really wont talk to him in a general sense because he wears cowboy boots to school with his shirt tucked in. Because he wears a suit and tie to school, why? just to wear it and be his own person. To most of those kids and some of the teachers, they don't find that to be "normal." Well, if that's not "normal." A guy wearing girls pants isn't "normal." Though it's percieved as so. I believe you should wear whatever you want and not be judged as different by everyone else. And since he is different than most people he is the victim of these things, as are many kids. Just because of the outer apperance.
Because of parent complaints, and kids.. I know they are kids but that doesn't dismiss the fact that it's wrong, we have decided to tranfer him elsewhere. He's not happy where he is at and he doesn't feel comfortable. People won't talk to him, the kids call him a psycho and tell him to get away. And some of the parents who have came up to me. Acting on defense of their children's safety, even though acting irrationally, doesn't want my brother in the same building with their kids. he scarred, and now he has to move to a different school just to escape the harassment.
I know this may seem meaningless to others, but to me it is quite a shame to have that happen. Knowing it's happening every single day around the nation, just because someone is a little different from somebody else. Kids are cruel these days, and some parents as well. It's also sad to think that after what happened to VT, God bless everyone involved. That some people find it fit to take advantage of those situations just for a little entertainment. even if it's ruining someone emotionally. Just because one is different doesn't make someone less of a person. They have feelings and are just like you and me. So what if he doesn't dribble the basketball, throw on the pads, or hit the diamond. It doesn't make him any different, I think some people need to learn this, sadly.
